Controller (Ref#093)
POSITION OVERVIEW
This is a hands-on financial leadership role at a large, multi-campus faith-based organization. You'll own the full accounting function, from payroll and accounts payable to budgeting, reporting, and audit coordination, while also serving as a strategic partner to the CFO and senior leadership team.
The organization runs complex financial operations across multiple locations. Your job is to keep those operations clean, compliant, and well-communicated. That means strong GAAP knowledge, comfort with ERP systems, and the ability to translate numbers into clear insights for leaders who aren't accountants.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Accounting Operations
- Direct the full accounting function, including accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and organizational financial policies.
- Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary contact with external auditors.
Financial Reporting & Forecasting
- Prepare financial statements and forecasting reports across multiple campuses and departments.
- Provide financial analysis and insights that support leadership decision-making.
- Translate complex financial data into clear, accessible summaries for non-financial leaders.
Budgeting & Planning
- Oversee the annual budgeting process in collaboration with campus and senior leaders.
- Monitor budget performance and flag variances with context and recommendations.
- Manage cash flow forecasting and planning to support ongoing operations.
Asset & Plan Management
- Monitor and manage the performance of invested assets against established objectives.
- Manage the organization's retirement plans and prepare all required reports.
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor the accounting staff team.
- Build a team culture that values accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting or finance.
- At least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Nonprofit or church accounting experience is a plus.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
- Proficiency with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with retirement plan reporting and invested asset management.
Leadership & Communication
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communicator who can work collaboratively with campus leaders and executives.
- Ability to translate financial complexity into clear language for non-financial stakeholders.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred.
